As a war between mankind and monstrous sea creatures wages on in the near future, a former pilot and a trainee are paired up to drive a seemingly obsolete special weapon in a desperate effort to save the world from the apocalypse.

Right from the start I’m going to say Pacific Rim is RIDICULOUS. It’s giant robots and alien things fighting on top of major cities to save the world. Let me not forget, there is a portal in the pacific between two tectonic plates where the alien Godzilla monsters enter the Earth. Yes, I’m not mistaken, that is the base of the story.

Pacific Rim has Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi. Two of which are English, so the film gets a thumbs up for that. Iris Elba plays his typical, don’t mess with me kind of guy. However, all of the other characters are baby faced in terms of big Hollywood blockbusters. On a positive note you could say that they were trying to get you to care for the characters not just turn up to the film because it had a major star in it.

Guillermo del Toro has bought us Pan’s Labyrinth and the Hellboy films. Pan’s Labyrinth was a superb film and must be watched by everybody, really, it’s that good. Hellboy was also a great take on the popular comics. So now he has moved onto Pacific Rim, big explosions and a crap story. Sound familiar?

Pacific Rim has its moments, such as the scene where the little girl is running through the streets away from the monster. It was a nice back story to Rinko’s character, Mako. The action sequences in Pacific Rim are massive! Seriously, the robots and aliens are about 150ft tall and you really get a sense of that by the way they swing their arms and how the camera usually looks up at them rather than down. It was done well.

A little annoyance I had were the scientists, Charlie Day and Burn Gorman. They spoke so fast and they were so cold as characters you despised them, you couldn’t care less about a character. It didn’t help that they were written so comically as well.

Pacific Rim was a good time; the story needed some more explaining or changing all together so it made sense. But the actions scenes were EPIC!

7.0/10

  1. Not perfect in any way, but still a bunch of fun if you're willing to accept monsters and robots brawling for over 2 hours. Good review Dylan.
